Rain, lightning pound Tampa Bay region — and more could be on the way

It felt like the kind of soaking only a tropical storm could bring. By some measurements, it was worse.

"We've had some tropical storms where we haven't had seven or eight inches of rain like this," said Bay News 9 chief meteorologist Mike Clay.

The onslaught of thunderstorms produced more than seven inches of rain in some areas Tuesday and continued to wreak havoc around Tampa Bay Wednesday morning. The system brought flooding, power outages, lightning that nearly destroyed a house in St. Petersburg and a tractor-trailer crash that blocked all southbound lanes on Interstate 275 near downtown Tampa for two hours.

Clay noted rain chances would be about 40 percent Thursday and 30 percent on Friday. The system that rolled through Tuesday and Wednesday was not unusual for this time of the year, he said, and we can expect more like it this month.

Smoke poured from a house at 2101 14th St. N in St. Petersburg belonging to Ed McBride, 61, who was on his computer when lightning hit, said St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Lt. Joel Granata.

After hearing several loud lightning strikes, McBride saw smoke coming from a utility closet containing a water heater. When he opened the utility closet, he saw flames, Granata said.

Fire officials believe the lightning hit the other side of the utility closet. Damage was estimated at about $100,000.

In downtown Tampa, a tanker truck filled with hot asphalt was heading through heavy rain in stop-and-go traffic just before 9 a.m. when it began to roll backwards on an up-hill section of I-275, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The truck slid back into a 2010 Mercedes, driven by 42-year-old Martin M. Ryan, and jackknifed across all southbound lanes near the Ashley Drive exit in downtown Tampa, pinning the car between the tanker and a wall on the outside lane, troopers said.

Trucker Enner K. Guerro, 68, of Tampa, was charged with careless driving.

FHP estimated more than $10,000 in damage was done to both vehicles. No one was injured. Traffic was blocked for two hours before cranes removed the truck about 11 a.m.

The crash was one of several Wednesday morning that officials attributed to road conditions caused by the extreme thunderstorms.

About 3 inches of rain fell on parts of Hillsborough and Pinellas, according to Bay News 9. The National Weather Service in Ruskin estimated the region got between 3 and 6 inches.

Streets flooded in low-lying areas of St. Petersburg, such as Shore Acres, and a few manhole covers popped off, creating road hazards, police said.
