Paddling Across the Sound; Kayakers Unite in Larchmont and Mamaroneck

When Dr. David Hellerstein was just a kid at summer camp in Canada he really liked canoeing—something that would stay with him into his later years.

After his move to Larchmont in 1990, it became clear to the psychiatrist that the incredible waterfront confronting him called for a kayak rather than a canoe.

“It was kind of a paddle sport that was more suited to the local environment,” said Hellerstein of his transition between sports.

After purchasing a kayak in the summer of 2004, Hellerstein was frustrated by how difficult it was to gain water access to the Long Island Sound.

The next year he formed the Kayakers Alliance of Larchmont and Mamaroneck (KALM) with hopes of advocating for better local and regional water access as well as near-water storage of kayaks in Larchmont, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle and other nearby communities in Westchester County.

“There were a lot of issues that kayakers faced and it didn’t seem like there was any forum to meet other kayakers and also to have a way of advocating for better facilities and access,” said Hellerstein about his motivation to start the group.

To date, KALM has over 200 members, most of who hail from the area.

When asked how he would rate the popularity of the sport, Hellerstein cites that “it has dramatically increased” over the years.

“It used to be you would see no kayaks on the water, maybe one or two,” said Hellerstein.  “Now, on a nice day, you’ll see half a dozen at a time, and over the course of the day, a couple of dozen.”

And the doctor has his own system for measuring the sport’s increasing popularity.

“You just look around town, a lot of people have kayak racks on their cars,” he pointed out.  “And there’s more racks at Harbor Island Park than there used to be.”

Joseph Russo has been Harbormaster at Harbor Island Park for the last three-and-a-half years and prides himself on having a boat in the harbor for the last 30 years.

“We have one rack that has 24 kayaks on it,” said Russo, while pointing out there were six more kayaks in in-water storage.

However, according to the Harbormaster, kayaking numbers are down compared to last year.

“You’ve got certain groups that are really into it, but we really didn’t see as big a push this year,” Russo said.

Russo described the typical kayaker as being in their mid-30’s or older.
