Week in Challengers
In a typical week, you might find up to three Challenger tournaments being played anywhere in the world. This week while the ATP elite were competing in Washington D.C. and Kitzbuhel for big points and big money there were 5 Challengers in action. The prize money ranging from $30,000 euros in Italy to the $100K in Vancouver.
The Challenger in Trani, Italy was played on red Clay with a draw of mostly unfamiliar names. Sometimes that can be what’s most interesting about a draw. Wondering who of these players might break through one day. The #1 seed, Rui Machado (ranked 84th) lost to 156th ranked Leonardo Mayer in the semi-finals. In the other half of the draw, Frederico Gil (ranked 93rd) lost in the first round 1-6 6-4 6-1 to an Italian Wildcard ranked 261st in the world. Andrea Arnaboldi did good with that upset win by reaching the SFs before losing to #3 seed, Steve Darcis of Belgium. The Singles Final is now set between #3 Steve Darcis and unseeded Leonardo Mayer. Darcis defeated Mayer 4-6 6-3 6-2.
The Challenger in Campos do Jordao, Brazil took place on Hard Courts. The most familiar names in this draw might be Ricardo Mello and Thiago Alves. The Brazilian, Alves, is a player that I use to see frequently on the USTA Challenger circuit. I am glad to see that he is still out there. Alves didn’t get far though…losing to fellow Brazilian, (1)Ricardo Mello (ranked 91st) . Mello reached the SFs where he lost to (3)Izak Van Der Merwe (ranked 115th) of South Africa. In the Final, Van Der Merwe faced another Brazilian (5)Rogerio Dutra Da Silva (ranked 129th). On his way to the Final, Dutra Da Silva had to endure a tight 3 set win over (5)Brian Dabul (ranked 163rd) of Argentina, defeating Dabul 7-6(1) 2-6 7-6(3). In the Final, Dutra Da Silva defeated Van der Merwe 6-4 6-7(5) 6-3
The Beijing International Challenger was held on Hardcourts and included names that would be familiar to some Tennis fans. The #1 seed in the tournament was Dudi Sela of Israel and #5 seed Danai Udomchoke of Thailand. Sela (ranked 81st) got all the way to the SFs before losing to eventual tournament winner, Farrukh Dustov (ranked 361st). Udomchoke (ranked 220th) lost to Inigo Cervantes-Huegen (ranked 407th) of Spain in the round of 16. On his road to the title, Dustov went to 3 sets in three out of 5 matches. Seemingly his easiest rounds were taking out (7)Denis Matsukevich (ranked 238th) of Russia in the first round and Tsung-Hua Yang (250th) of Taipei in the Final. Dustov defeated Yang 6-1 7-6(4).

Skrufff: I make music because…
Rui Da Silva: “I find it’s a way of expressing feelings and emotions, also I have found over the years that when I don’t make music for extended periods of time I become agitated and start felling really down. It’s almost like it feeds my inner energy to be making music. It also lets you forget the world around you.”
Skrufff: The best way to overcome a creative block is….
Rui Da Silva: “Over the years I have developed loads of techniques to overcome creative blocks. I have suffered from it on many occasions and I found that everything from taking the day off, taking the opportunity to learn a new tool in the studio, practicing an instrument, studying another composer/ musician /producers’ work or going and working in someone else’s studio. There are many ways to overcome them.”
Skrufff: I started making music seriously when . . .
Rui Da Silva: “I don’t even remember when I started taking it seriously as for me that is all I always wanted to do. I always worked in music one way or another since my teenage years, I started throwing parties and DJing very early at about the age of 12/13 and later on around 17 I started my first band; a garage band. From that I went on to focus on engineering and production.
