We can't live in our 'perfect family home': It's a village haven - just not ...

Where they could bring up their three boys.

They could never have predicted that seven years later they would be selling up because each of their sons has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and cannot enjoy their rural surroundings. The condition, often mistaken for lazy or unruly behaviour, also means Finlay, 13, Callum, 11, and Theo, five, need private education.

Back in 2004, the couple's initial bid of £620,000 - £20,000 over the asking price - for the houses and 22 acres was topped by a rival.

The couple viewed dozens more houses, but found nothing that matched the potential nor the location of Eastfield Farm in the pretty village of Chawton, where Jane Austen spent the last eight years of her life. They decided to write to the farmer who owned it, begging for a second chance.

The bidder who beat them was trying to reduce the price he had offered, so the owners decided to give the Sendalls a second chance. Five weeks later, in November 2004, having agreed to pay £675,000 to include another 42 acres, the couple and their two sons, and Rob's son and daughter - Joanna, 19, and William, 17, from a previous marriage - moved into one of the cottages.

. But three months after moving in, Rob, 46, a former estate agent, received an offer for First Title, the conveyancing business he had set up in the Nineties. It was enough to clear their mortgage and pay for the building work.

They drew up plans to turn the cottages into one house, extend it by 50 per cent and add a drawing room with a cruck roof - an ancient building method in which curved oak beams support the building.

'It's made from green oak which shrinks as it dries and strengthens the joints. The builders lifted the roof off the cottages and stripped out the inside,' says Claire who managed the project.

'They didn't waste a thing and although ended up spending £200,000,' she says. The result is vast areas of glass with solid oak frames.

The couple spent £1million to create the six-bedroom house, of which £35,000 went on a biomass boiler which serves the underfloor heating and hot water, and is fed by logs that cost £600 a year. Solar panels on one roof mean that in summer the boiler is usually switched off.

The couple have put Eastfield Farm and 25 acres on the market for £1.85million. The rest of the land, let to a sheep farmer, is being sold separately.
