Scott brings new energy to Superfest concert
After last year’s all-male lineup of Hamilton, Kem, Jaheim and Raheem Devaughn, Scott brought fresh energy to the show with an audience of about 9,000 fans.
The previously embattled Scott seemed ready to have a good time, wearing neon green high-tops, a silver sequined top and black leggings. In recent years, Scott’s music career quieted as she ironed out a disagreement with her old record company. In the interim, she kept busy acting and supporting Maxwell on tour.
But she’s back with a new album, "The Light of the Sun," and she seemed happy to finally have new music to perform. Scott’s set was drenched in "The Light of the Sun" songs, understandable from her perspective but maybe not as much for fans. It’s only been out since June, not giving listeners much of a chance to really know the music.
Scott, boasting powerful pipes as always, a slimmed-down shape and a stage packed with musicians and singers, opened with the retro hip-hop-flavored "Shame" from the new album.
She kept the energy on the high end early on with "Gimme," "Hate on Me" and the Hamilton-assisted "So In Love," the latter a cut from "The Light of the Sun." "Le BOOM Vent Suite," "Blessed," "Rolling Hills" and "Womanifesto" were among the other new songs rolled out.
Not wanted to strictly be regarded as a ballad singer, she rapped with Fresh on a combination of his classic "La-Di-Da-Di" and their joint "All Cried Out Redux" from the new album.
But it was a song such as "The Way," the type of creamy ballad that is the epitome of Scott, that pleased fans most, as did a particularly nasty lyric she inserted that had fans roaring. "A Long Walk," "Golden," "Cross My Mind," "It’s Love," "Slowly, Surely" and "Crown Royal" were other older nuggets she served up, and of course the climactic "He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)," performed in its original version and a dance remix version.
She topped it off with another new song, "Blessed," which addresses her newfound happiness.
Hamilton, between albums these days, mostly took fans through his greatest hits and staples, songs such as "Comin’ From Where I’m From," "Can’t Let Go," "The Point of It All," "Charlene" and "Cool." Unlike John Legend’s opening set for Sade last week, Hamilton pulled it off.
Hamilton knows how to keep his music fresh and interesting. He took his show off the stage and engineered a soulful train with his backing singers into the audience, where he danced with fans.

She handles this song with such seeming effortlessness, yet it's also apparent this is a song that is not easy to pull off well.
