Marvel Secord? A gun, dog were constant companions
Marvel Secord was born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, Oct. 16, 1801, and came to Michigan with his parents Isaac and Sarah Wellman Secord at an early age. When a small lad. he accompanied his father into one of the Indian wars of the northwest.
Mr. Secord lived in Owosso in Shiawassee County where he was engaged in a large scale gun smithy, wagon and carriage shop.
In 1861 he and his son Jerome set out on a hunting and trapping expedition in the virgin pine forest of central Michigan. They came up the Tittabawassee River by canoe, which was hewn from a large pine log. They carried with them all necessary equipment such as axes, cross-cut saws, guns, traps, clothing, bedding, and food supplies. His start upon landing at Dick's Forks consisted of three months of supplies and $1 in money. In company with his son, Jerome, and a German, Mr. Secord had spent several months' hunting on the Tobacco before coming to the Forks.
On the west bank of the Tittabawassee River at the mouth of the Sugar River they built their hunting lodge. This place was called Dick's Forks.
Mr. Secord had found the trapping very profitable in Gladwin averaging about $900 per year. He decided to return to Owosso, and get his family and move them all to Dick's Forks. With his family, including his wife and five children, he went from Owosso to St. Charles by wagon and steamer Little Nell, to Saginaw from Midland up the river on the steamer Belle Seymour. No logs had been run north of "16" (Edenville) at that time.
While in Midland the family got supplies, after a week's journey with all their worldly goods in a canoe during which many hard trials were passed, they arrived at Dick's Forks.
Marvel made one more trip alone down the river to Midland before winter set in with two canoes fastened together. He brought back potatoes, flour and a large amount of white beans and salt pork. These, supplemented with venison and rabbits, would last until spring.
When spring came they cut off enough of the big timber, so the sun could get through enough for them to plant turnips and potatoes around the roots of the trees which were to be the food supply for the coming winter. They then began working at clearing off small areas of ground to plant larger amounts of crops.
Once every two months Marvel had to take two or three days to make the trip to Midland to bring flour, salt, pork and beans for the family's food supply.
Marvel built bunks two high for the children, with straw ticks for mattresses, but instead of straw they used cedar boughs crushed up. Mrs. Secord never wasted a minute as they had very few clothes and all were made by her. She had to wash them out at night put them up on lines over the wood stove where she had beans cooking for the next day's meal. She would knit socks for the family or make mittens out of the pants cloth. The children's education came from their mom, each day some time was taken out for reading, writing and math.
