TU football: Wednesday practice report

Position update: Quarterbacks

G.J. Kinne has a stranglehold on the starting quarterback position, but creating depth at the position is a focus during fall camp.

Backup quarterback Kalen Henderson is getting many of the reps with the second team. He looked sharp during portions of Wednesday’s mini-scrimmage inside Chapman Stadium. More importantly, he is gaining valuable experience with repetitions.

“Kalen talked about getting into a couple of scramble situations and losing his breath and not being able to think clearly,” TU coach Bill Blankenship said following Wednesday’s workout. “That’s why we do it that way, ... there’s no shortcut for getting in a series and running play after play after play. That’s the reality of what you get in game time.”

Third-string quarterback and true freshman Joseph Calcagni has a calm demeanor in the pocket. He appears to still be absorbing things.

News and notes

Welcome to two-a-days: Tulsa practiced twice in one day for the first time this season on Wednesday.

The Golden Hurricane’s first practice was delayed nearly two hours following heavy thunderstorms and lightning in the area. When the rain slowed, the team scrimmaged inside Chapman Stadium for about 60 minutes.

The team went back onto the field on Wednesday afternoon for a second practice. “We got started a little late, but the weather was a welcome relief,” said Blankenship, whose team was greeted by 70-degree temperatures. “We shortened down our scrimmage today from what we originally was going to try to do and I think that was really good. I saw some bright spots on both sides of the ball, offensively and defensively. That’s the kind of scrimmage that the head coach likes.”

Like a sponge: Cody Green isn’t getting a lot of reps during Tulsa’s scrimmage portion of practices.

That is likely by design. The Nebraska transfer quarterback will not be eligible until 2012 and it is probable he will be a scout team quarterback by this time next week.

Green has spent his first 10 days getting settled at TU.

“The team, the coaches, they’ve basically opened up and welcomed me with open arms,” Green said. “They are a great group of guys.”

What did his family and friends think when he chose Tulsa?

“They were thankful everything was over and that I’d found a home,” said Green, who is from Dayton, Texas.
