Four-legged citizens of the desert are in for a big treat! The brand new, state-of-the-art Palm Springs Animal Shelter is scheduled to debut in late September. At present, the project is right on schedule, and once finished, it will triple the size of the existing one.
The $7.9 million project has been a vision since 2004, and the 19,000-square-foot facility will allow the shelter to house hundreds of animals versus the current 100-animal capacity of the existing shelter. Features include a reclaimed water system, high tech cleaning system, solar tubes, and energy-efficient air conditioning and air-filtering systems.
Some are calling it one of the most sophisticated shelters in the country. The shelter will feature glass-front enclosures for the cats, and dogs will have sound-proof quarters that are bright and open. There is also a drive-in bay so the facility can unload horses and other wildlife without fear of them running away. Officials are currently looking to add 70-80 new volunteers to help staff the new facility.
Funding for the project has been a collaborative effort by the City of Palm Springs, Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, and the Sustainability Commission, Southern California Edison, and some private donors are also to thank. The new shelter will be located at 4575 E. Mesquite in the Demuth Park neighborhood.
