Albert Bierstadt was born in Germany, but his family travelled to New Bedford in 1833. He was an American painter known for his landscapes of the American West. His artistic career was punctuated by numerous voyages and expeditions during the Westward Expansion. He was one of the first to depict the untouched and untamed American landscapes. He was part of the movement known as the Hudson School, which consisted of a handful of nineteenth-century artists with a taste for Romantic painting.

The auction, one of the largest in Alaska, gathered approximately three hundred bidders and realised seventeen million dollars. This is less than half the figure of 2008, when the annual sale generated $37 million, but an improvement on 2009 and 2010, which realised $11.7 million and $9.2 million respectively.
