School bells to ring on Friday

School bells will ring for students in the public schools of LaSalle Parish on Friday, August 12th, as well as those who attend the LaSalle Head Start School in Good Pine. Temple Christian Academy of Jena will open the new school session on Monday of next week.

The 2011-12 session officially begins today with teachers and paraprofessionals participating in an in-service workshop at Jena High School throughout the day.

Members of the Kiwanis Clubs of Jena and Olla and the LaSalle Ministerial Alliance are providing a prayer luncheon to those attending the in-service session. These groups have provided the noon meal for the workshop for the past several years.

On Thursday teachers will attend faculty meetings at their respective schools and then spend the remainder of the day getting their classrooms ready for the arrival of students on Friday.

Superintendent Roy Breithaupt said a lot of work has been done over the summer months getting ready for the new school year.

"We have everything ready and on go for the arrival of students this Friday, and I am hopeful we will have a successful and safe new school term," he said. "We have the best qualified group of teachers and support personnel to be found in any school system and they are ready for anothconducted Friday, Monday and Tuesday, August 12, 15 and 16 for Pre-K students. Parents will be notified of their child's appointment time for this mandated test.

Tyler also said no Kindergarten or Pre-K students would be at school for the first three days of the new session. On Wednesday, Aug. 17, all Kindergarten students will report to class, along with half of the Pre-K students. The other half of Pre-K students will be in class on Thursday, Aug. 18, with all Pre-K students in class on Friday, Aug. 19. Parents of Pre-K students will be informed which day their child will attend classes.

Parents of pre-kindergarten students are reminded that tuition will be levied for Pre-K students who do not qualify for free or reduced lunches. Last school term, the school board approved a $100 per month tuition, which remains in effect for this school term.

According to the policy adopted by the board, "all students qualifying for free or reduced lunches will pay NO tuition. Students qualifying for paid lunches will pay a tuition of $100 per month."

"Tuition payments will be due between the 1st and 5th of each month (except August when payments are due between the 12th and 20th). Students not paying the tuition by the end of the month will be dropped from the program until payment has been made.

Positive Discipline - North Branch Reformed Church of New Jersey ...

Positive Discipline A seminar with practical ideas and realistic perspectives on parenting and six easy steps to being a more positive and effective parent.

Ever plop on the couch after a long day of fights over toys, temper in the cereal aisle, and tears over bedtime? Then you might have said aloud, O God, I don’t want to do another day like this!

If you have, you may be closer to help than you think. We have all watched the Nanny to get parenting tips, or read books with unbelievable titles promising a new kid in 5 days, or creeped on parents whom we jealously admired as having it together. And yet our parenting mantra is too often, O God, I don’t want to do another day like this.

Join Gigi Schweikert, mother of four and author of over ten books on child development, as she takes us down the sometimes frustrating, yet always rewarding road of parenthood. Gigi’s practical ideas and realistic perspective on parenting will have you laughing and learning how to be a more effective parent. Learn six easy steps to stop yelling and start being a more positive and effective parent today. Discover ways to set appropriate boundaries for your child and have logical consequences for misbehavior. And, learn how spirituality can be a powerful resource in this all. A can’t miss talk for parents of toddlers, preschoolers and elementary age children.

Known for her humor and practical messages, Gigi is a nationally recognized expert on early childhood education who directed the United Nations Early Childhood Program in New York City, and developed and managed the Johnson & Johnson’s System of Family Centers. In church circles she is known as The Church Nanny. “I don’t think we always realize what an exceptional responsibility we have working with children, one in which every move we make, and everything we say, can potentially affect a child’s spiritual journey.” When Gigi is not in front of the computer writing, she’s behind the wheel of a mini-van carting around her four kids. Although originally from North Carolina, Gigi lives in New Jersey with her husband, four children, three dogs, many chickens, and one turtle.

Gigi will be speaking at the North Branch Reformed Church (203 State Route 28, Bridgewater, NJ) on Thursday, September 15 from 7-8 PM. Childcare is free if requested. For further information see www.nbrc.com, or call 908-725-2313.
