Pet Talk: Hasbro's Monopoly' game has gone to designer breeds
My favorite Monopoly token is the sturdy little Scottish Terrier dog. Alas, he is no more. In the new Monopoly game, “Here and Now” edition, Hasbro has modernized and substituted the designer breed Labradoodle for the terrier token.
This choice seems to have been made in an effort to keep up with the current popularity of hybrid mixed dog breeds. We are familiar with one of the more popular mixed breeds, the Labradoodle as well as the Cockapoo, Schnoodle, Yorkipoo, Pomapoo, Peekapoo, Shihpoo and Goldendoodle.
There are many others. There is even an organization to help keep things straight.
The American Canine Hybrid Club registers mixed breeds from purebred ancestry. The ACHC has a registry of more than 175 different mixed breed dogs.
Considering that there are around 200 possible combinations of purebred dogs, breeders have been busy.
When they list their creations, the first breeder to list a particular combination is given the right to name the breed mix.
Out of this have come some interesting breed names. My top 10 favorite registered names are: Beagle/Jack Russell Terrier = Jack-A-Bee, Bearded Collie/Dalmatian = Bodacion, Bichon Frise/Coton de Tulear = Biton, Boston Terrier/Pug = Buggs, Boston Terrier/Shih Tzu = BoShih, Brussels Griffon/Lhasa Apso = Lhaffon, Chihuahua/Dachshund = Chiweenie, Chihuahua/MinPin = Chipin, Italian Greyhound/Poodle = Pootalian, Bulldog/Treeing Walker = English Bull-Walker. This last one is hard to imagine. A Bulldog chasing raccoons? Not!
The list goes on: Poodle/Toy Fox Terrier = Foodle, Brussels Griffon/Shih Tzu = Shiffon, Chihuahua/Pekingese = Cheeks, Chihuahua/Rat Terrier = Rat-Cha, Cocker Spaniel/Shiba Inu = Shocker, Dachshund/Pomeranian = Dameranian, English Springer Spaniel/Lab = Labradinger, Italian Greyhound/Poodle = Pootalian, Papillon/Pomeranian = Paperanian, Poodle/Saint Bernard = Saint Berdoodle.
Imagine the usual conversation when dog owners meet. “What a great looking dog. What is it? This is a “Shocker” or a “Pootalian”. How about the vision of a “Saint Berdoodle? A big dog with Poodle coat digging in the avalanche for survivors?
There are pros and cons to acquiring a “designer” breed dog. They are expensive but breeders say that the mixed breeds often improve the traits of the original breeds. One legitimate example might be the “Puggle”. Mixing breeds does not always result in the best traits of the purebred ancestry.
