Movie Review | 13 Assassins: Samurai bloodbath stirring

, The action-comedy starring Aziz Ansari and Jesse Eisenberg, opens this weekend. The movie stars Eisenberg as a pizza delivery guy who gets unwillingly wrangled into a bank robbery when his customers (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) strap a bomb to his chest at gunpoint.

In August 2003, a pizza delivery man in Erie, Pa., was in a similar situation when a bomb strapped to his neck exploded, killing him instantly.

By  Manohla Dargis opens with a dignified man sitting alone in a large courtyard.

Perfectly centered in the shot, he says nothing, his face a ferocious mask. But words are immaterial given his open shirt and the blade in his hand.

Japanese director Takashi Miike has no qualms about letting the red run down the screen. Here, though, instead of showing the blade sinking in, he moves in closer, letting the scene play out in the man's crumbling face, the gray sky framing him as the moist, tearing sounds of the knife doing its terrible work fill the air.

Set in the 1860s at the close of the Edo period, not long before the Meiji restoration, 13 Assassins .

The dead man, it emerges, has committed seppuku (ritualistic suicide) to protest the baroquely barbaric excesses of Lord Naritsugu (a fantastic Goro Inagaki), the shogun's half brother, who is poised to assume even greater power. Pretty, petty and very likely insane, Naritsugu is the embodiment of outre imperial decadence. He doesn't just rape the wife of a minion, he also murders her husband in front of her.

This cruelty and others serve as the evidence against Naritsugu, justifying the ensuing violence that will wash blood away with blood. First, Miike has to round up his avengers, the 13 warriors of the film's title. It's a sign of difficult samurai times that the leader of the group, Shinzaemon Shimada (the great Koji Yakusho), enters perched on a fishing ladder, a pole in his hand. It's unclear whether he is fishing for food or leisure, but the point is that he's fishing, not fighting, having resigned himself to a quiet twilight. Like the not especially dirty dozen he assembles, Shinzaemon finds purpose in battle.

But for those not schooled in Japan's past (or period movies), it helps to know that during the relatively peaceful Edo period (roughly 1615 to 1868) the role of the samurai changed as the way of the warrior became the way of the heavily controlled and

I really liked the original 1973 version of this film (known variously as “Japan Sinks”, “Submersion of Japan” etc.). It was a Toho special effects filled epic which was true to its title. The acting was pretty good and the effects gave Hollywood a run for their money. Surprisingly it was also rather melancholic and downbeat. I have the Hong Kong disc of that film which cuts at least 10 minutes from its runtime, a fact I wasn’t aware of when I bought it. I’m not sure if it’s a better film because of this, as I’ve heard others say the film is way too long. I knew Shinji Higuchi was directing this film and had very high hopes for it. Higuchi was a core member of Daicon Film. Most notably he did the special effects on their epic “The Eight-Headed Giant Serpent Strikes Back”, the only Daicon Film to receive a proper commercial video release that wouldn’t send copyright lawyers swarming to the front door of Gainax. He also did the special effects for their other tokusatsu shorts and became a storyboard artist for many Gainax productions. Outside of the studio he worked on “Godzilla (1984, aka Return of Godzilla or Godzilla 1985)”, “Mikadoroid” and was special effects director for the 1990’s Gamera trilogy, considered the best daikaiju films ever made in many people’s eyes. In the last 10 years, he’s gotten into directing. His first film was “Lorelei”, a sci fi submarine film. That was a well-received film. “Sinking of Japan” is his second feature. Well, it does start off with quite a bang, with a rather spectacular scene where Tokyo rescue squad member, Reiko (Kou Shibasaki), saves submarine pilot Toshio (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi) and young orphaned girl Misaki (Mayuko Fukuda) from an explosion in post-earthquake Tokyo. While dangling from a helicopter, of course. We soon get to the meat of the story with the discovery of the fact the plate Japan sits on will be dragged under the ocean. 40 years is given as a date that this disaster will happen, but the actual time they have left is latter discovered to be 338 days. Plausibility went out the window at this stage. I really tried hard to suspend disbelief, but couldn’t. Things just got sillier and sillier. The prime minister’s plane is engulfed by a volcanic eruption which reaches the cruising level of a 737.
