BUTUAN CITY, August 7 (PIA) - A member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) died while six others were wounded after a landmine planted by New Peoples Army exploded in Sitio Mahayahay, Brgy. Pinagbakatan, Lingig, Surigao del Sur.
The government troops were in hot pursuit of the rebels who were allegedly behind the abduction of Lingig, Surigao del Sur Mayor Henry Dano Saturday morning.
According to reports, the incident happened after the 75th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army conducted rescue operation for Lingig town mayor Dano and his two escorts who are also members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
However, officials of the AFP here said that despite the setback government troops are determined to continue to pursue rescue operation for the victims being held captive allegedly by members of the Front Committee 20 of the New Peoples Army.
Earlier, there were unconfirmed reports that the victims were brought to Davao Oriental.
PNP-Caraga Regional Director Reynaldo Rafal said motive for the abduction is still unknown.
Meanwhile, the regions police chief said local crisis management committee spearheaded by Surigao del Sur Gov. Johnny Pimentel has already been organized .
The said committee is gathering information and awaiting communication from the abductors regarding demands for release of the town mayor and his escorts.

This day started. I pulled out all our centavos that we have been saving in a plastic Gatorade bottle and counted it this morning. We had exactly P120 worth of them. I’m waiting for Neneng to go to the bank for Pepsi, so she can cash them in for me. No sense in letting all that money lay around. The P120 is not much, but it’s enough to buy 3 or 4 kilos of rice.
I decided to watch TV and if I fell asleep while watching it, that would be okay too. Sometimes I wonder if the cable company knows that my favorite shows here are NCIS, Bones and Criminal Minds. They only seem to go out when I’m watching those shows. Today I was watching Bones and at 1:55pm, the cable went out. Of course it was an episode that I have never seen before.
Useless Knowledge: Marine mammals such as dolphins and whales manage to sleep without drowning, because only half their brain sleeps, while the other half stays awake and handles the breathing and swimming chores. The two hemispheres of their brains work totally independently. For 8 hours, the entire brain is awake. The left side then sleeps for 8 hours. When it wakes up, the right side sleeps for 8 hours. Thus, the marine mammals get 8 hours of sleep without ever having to stop physically. I was born on a mountain top in Tennessee. I was the biggest man in the land of the free. I kilt me .... wait a minute ... that was my previous life. The 20th century me was born in Connecticut back in January 1958. I got to be the oldest of 5, but not by much (my sister was also born in 1958 (December)). When I was in the 2nd grade we moved to Texas for about a year, then back to Connecticut for a few months, then back to Texas for good. I grew up pretty poor, but a big eater, so I had to get jobs as a youngster to help feed myself as much as I wanted. So I worked odd jobs after school, on weekends and during the summer since the age of 8 years old. When I turned 18 and graduated high school, I joined the US Air Force. For the most part I was a Computer Operator, working on mainframe computers for most of my Air Force career. I retired from the US Air Force officially on 1 Oct 1993. I am married. I got married on 7 April 1980 and am still married to the same woman.
