Injured Border Collie Suffers Setback

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Shamrock, a blue-eyed border collie that was shot in the mouth and left to starve, has suffered a setback.

Since June, there has been a community effort to save his life after he was found near Owensboro.

Shamrock underwent a surgery in June where vets tried to stabilize his mouth. A recent infection led to an additional 10-hour surgery.

"When we got him, upon arrival, he hadn't been able to drink. He'd been left for dead. Very tragic," said Rebecca Eaves with the Shamrock Arrow Fund.

After the Davies County Sheriff's Department found Shamrock with a shattered, bullet-torn jaw, vets at the Louisville Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Services clinic put the pieces together with eight pins and a stabilizer.

"It was an external fixator just to try and help those bones heal,” said caretaker and vet technician Meg Poole.

Hundreds in the community helped with donations, but after the first surgery in late June signs of infection began to show.

"His bottom jaw had kind of moved forward and his teeth weren't meeting as they should,” Poole said.

The bone infection on both side of Shamrock's jaw called for an even more intricate 10-hour surgery Thursday.

"The second surgery was much more intense because they had to go on both sides of the jaw, take out the infection as much as possible,” LVSES surgeon Dr. Tom Day.

Since Thursday, the swelling has gone down, but tests are still being done to determine what bacteria are causing all the trouble. Depending on the type of infection it is, treatment could be tough.

"And there's, unfortunately, a chance that it may not work at all,” Day said.

The tough question for these vets: Is the fight for Shamrock’s life beneficial for his quality of life in the future? They said the answer lies in Shamrock’s love of life.

"That's why we did the second fix. That's why we're all pulling for him. Because he's so loving,” Poole said. "He wants to live. So we're trying to help him."

"His attitude as you can see has been top notch. And it does matter. We really want to look into, at the dog. We don't want to put them through something they're not willing and wanting to go through,” Eaves said.

The veterinary specialists said they'll continue to watch Shamrock’s attitude.
