GENERAL FISHING:

What a week weatherwise. I was a little fortunate in that I left Perth Friday week ago and returned in the middle of this week and so missed all of the storms and high winds. I did note however that the metropolitan waters forecast on several days was for seas of 3 metres with a 6 metre swell. Fishing the ocean beaches and trying to get offshore in those sort of conditions is not an option. As a result there is not a lot to report from metropolitan beach or boat anglers this week. However all is not lost as there have been some good catches made by anglers fishing the river system. Many anglers chasing bream have reported good catches around the Casino and from the Canning Bridge area. Those who have fished the lower reaches of the river and the inner harbour have been rewarded with some good catches of mulloway and big skippy.

I recently attended the Australian Anglers Association’s National Convention and Angling Championships held at South West Rocks in northern New South Wales. We in Western Australia weren’t too happy when we had restrictions applied to our fishing with tighter bag limits and sizes however we are a country mile in front of the eastern states when it comes to quality fishing. This is as a result of these restrictions being applied and being adhered to. In the eastern states it is still ‘open slather’ on many species and anglers are finding a lot of species are now hard to find let alone catch. Thankfully here in Western Australia we also tend to fish competitions in a ‘species format’ where by the participating anglers catch as many different species as possible during the competition. Points are scored according to the number of species and overall bag weight, with the winner having to catch at least 6 species to win. This style of competition is a far better way of competing rather than huge fish kills that are really a thing of the past. The conservation minded angler of today does not condone this style of competition and generally abhors it.

As we move into August we are starting to see a lot more daylight. This week, when compared to last week, sees an average increase of 10 minutes per day extra daylight. This means more fishing time. As the sun moves further south each week, temperatures will start to rise. We will firstly notice the increase in air temperature and then in ocean water temperature. We definitely need more rain, not only to boost the dam levels but to also trigger fish migrations and breeding cycles. Tailor are one species that seem to have a better breeding season the year following good rains. I don’t know any angler who doesn’t appreciate catching big tailor, especially in the metropolitan area.

Maintain well above average temperatures until a low and associated fronts move into the Bight and then further east through the end of the working week. These systems will gradually introduce cooler air with temperatures sliding back to average.

The high near New Zealand that is directing the warm conditions in the south is also driving fresh and dry south east to easterly winds across the NorthernTerritory with a continuation of dangerous fire conditions. This pattern will not change until winds tend more humid easterly around Thursday.

Forecast models are varying significantly by the weekend with the low being placed in significantly different positions which would have a dramatic effect on the weather forecast over the south east states so it will be another 24 hours before a better gauge of the weekend conditions can be more accurately gauged.
