The Novice Abroad: Une journée à Paris...
The train ride was only two hours, but it was several hours more before we actually came to the surface and looked around. The train station is directly adjacent to the Louvre by metro train, and the Louvre is all underground! Though I was exhausted, seeing really famous original pieces of artwork was not a bad way to spend the morning. And by splitting up into groups, I think we managed to see three of the four wings of the Louvre in around two hours! Not bad for a place that its said would take months to look at the complete collection. Something we marveled at when we were inside the art museum were the mobs surrounding the iconic pieces like the Mona Lisa and the Venus De Milo. Objectively, these pieces are pretty unimpressive, and broken, respectively. They were each surrounded by SCORES of goregous paintings and statues that I honestly thought made the 'famous' works pale in comparison. And yet here were hundreds of people, rushing this little tiny painting and this barely intact sculpture. I suppose the mystery of the two is the major reason we revere them so much. *shrug* I guess I just don't get it. Despite the LONG list of sights we were supposed to be seeing during our only day as a full class in Paris, we had a surprisingly leisurely time. Not having to hoof it all over France was a godsend, as we took a bus tour on top of a double decker, and then a lovely boat tour along the Seine River. And it turns out that Paris, as I've heard every visitor recount, is a gorgeous city. The architecture and monuments just overpower you from all directions. But then again, that was sort of the point when modern Paris was designed, wasn't it?
