Beloit native competes to be show's 'Top Shot'
Season Three of "Top Shot" premieres at 9 p.m. Tuesday on the History Channel. Local residents can see it two hours earlier by attending a DVD presentation, set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Central Christian Church, 2460 Milwaukee Road, Beloit. The viewing is free, but an offering will be taken to benefit the Beloit and Rockford police departments' chaplain programs.
Sara Ahrens served in the Army and as a cop but didn't get serious about marksmanship until she had to shoot a man who was trying to stab her.
Starting Tuesday, people across the country will learn how well the Rockford, Ill., police sergeant can shoot when they view the History Channel's "Top Shot" reality show.
The Beloit native is one of 16 competitors in the show's third season, which begins Tuesday.
Law enforcement officers and others across the stateline area will tune in to see one of their own. They include her sister, Kathy Sukus, who is operations manager for the Rock County 911 Center, and Sukus' husband, Dean, a Janesville police sergeant.
Before the officer-involved shooting in 1998, "I wasn't bad, but I wasn't anything special," she said.
The event was a Rockford police response to a domestic dispute in which a man tried to stab her.
She fired once, wounding him in the abdomen.
"It was a point-and-shoot situation," she said. "It had the effect it needed to.
"Once you feel like someone is trying to murder you, it changes you."
The incident began a journey that took her from OK to quite good on the firing range.
One of the first steps was FBI firearms school, where she changed her grip and her stance and learned other pointers.
"By the end of week, I was shooting better than I ever shot. I had no idea I could shoot that well," she said.
She continued to take training, sometimes on her own.
She felt like a novice when it came to firearms, so she started buying them. She has continued the hobby by buying a few guns each year.
She also branched out. She throws knives, shoots darts from a blowgun and shoots clays.
Ahrens joined Rockford police in 1997. She worked her way up to sergeant. She was a supervisor for the department's SWAT team. She also was the department's supervisor of training and recruiting and range master.
She played tennis and softball at Beloit Memorial High School, graduating in 1991.
"She's been athletic, but I think she's one of those girls that wants to show guys that she can do what they can do," sister Kathy Sukus said. "She's really motivated and likes to challenge herself.

Sports are the essential need for everyone. It gives us not only a healthy body but also fun and refreshment. The types of sports are varied. There is a kind of sport that needs you to move the body a lot. There is also a kind of sport that does not need to move your body a lot such as yoga, taichi, and so on. Darts is also one of those sports. In this sport, you do not have to move your body a lot but the strategy arrangement is really important in this game. The equipment needed for this game is dartboard and darts. The dartboard made from fiber which can be easily apart after used. A long time ago, the United Kingdom uses the dartboard made from wood. As a result, this wood will be shaped a hole after use. They have to repair the wood every night. Usually, they play this game at night in the pub. Since it really takes time, some pubs close their darts game and people become disappointed. It is the interesting game for the people. Then, there is an idea to make a better dartboard which is from fiber. Fiber is more efficient than the wood. This idea used until now. Dartboard from fiber is not cheap; therefore there is also a cheaper dartboard which is made from paper. It is more for the children who want to play. The serious player will choose the fiber dartboard. From long time ago until now, the rule of the darts is just the same. So, the dartboard should be put in some exact measurement. The dartboard should be put on the wall 183 cm distance from the player to stand. It is also about 6 feet. The distance from the dartboard to the floor is 173 cm. In other words, it is about 8 feet. Darts is a good game for everyone without considering age. Not only youth and adult can play darts, children also can do this game. About the dartboard, it consists of four sections. These four sections consist of bull's eyes, bull, triple ring, and double ring. The numbers around the board are only specified for the double ring and triple ring. The score for bull's eyes is 50 points which is the highest point. The bull's score is 25 points which is the second highest point in the game. The good dartboard is a board that separates those sections with thin wire. The thinner the wire the best dartboard it is. To play darts need a skill of strategy management. At first, it was only for fun but then more people interested in it and it becomes a sport activity. This game can be played by two people or as a team.
