The Michigan Supreme Court has declined to review a case that could have given gays, lesbians and unmarried heterosexual couples in Michigan legal standing to obtain joint custody of their children.

A 4-3 majority said Friday that "we are not persuaded that the questions presented should be reviewed by this court." Justice Marilyn Kelly dissented, saying: "This case cries out for ruling by the state's highest court." She was joined by Justices Michael Cavanagh and Diane Hathaway.

The case involved Renee Harmon and Tammy Davis, a Grosse Ile couple whose nearly 20-year relationship ended in 2008 after Davis had three children through artificial insemination. A Wayne County judge ruled in April 2010 that Harmon had legal standing to try to pursue joint custody of the children she helped raise, but the Michigan Court of Appeals disagreed.

Statewide Snyder recall group raises $24,089

The largely volunteer campaign to recall Gov. Rick Snyder has raised a relatively paltry amount of money -- $24,089 -- to finance its petition drive aimed at forcing an election in the fall, according to reports filed Monday with the Michigan Secretary of State.

The Committee to Recall Rick Snyder reported 648 individual contributions, ranging from $10 to $1,000. A majority were from Michiganders, although a significant number are from out-of-state.

Nearly half of the money raised was used to print and distribute petitions, according to the report. No spending on paid petition circulators was reported.

The campaign needs to collect the signatures of 807,000 registered voters within a 90-day period to force an election. Organizers have said they planned to submit the petitions to state elections officials Aug. 5.

TEACHERS BACK: The Detroit Public Schools has started to recall laid-off teachers and other staff, just days before the July 29 effective date. So far, layoff notices for 6,884 employees have been rescinded, district spokesman Steve Wasko said. All DPS workers -- about 10,000 people -- were laid off in the spring as officials finalized the 2011-12 budget. A total of 4,198 layoff notices were sent to DPS teachers in April. To date, 3,740 have been rescinded.
