Riffle, an organic private chef, urged the board to let her prove that chickens can be compatible with town living. She has no noisy roosters. She spent $816 building a coop that will allegedly discourage predators. Chicken wire is embedded deep underground to prevent varmints like raccoons from digging to enter the coop. Additional wire is electrified with just enough juice to fend off everything from bears to dogs without causing them long-term harm. McBride was the council's main chicken fan. He proposed using Riffle's “chicken palace” as the experiment to see if problems with predators or neighbors arise. Councilwomen Jacque Whitsitt and Katie Schwoerer went along with the concept although they expressed concerns about predators. Schwoerer said she doesn't want any bears or other predators shot by the Colorado Division of Wildlife because they became an alleged nuisance for trying to get at the chickens. Riffle didn't initially plan to go rogue. Information supplied by town staff and Riffle indicates Riffle talked to town staff last spring about establishing a coop. She was told the first step was to prove she has consent from all her neighbors. She did and the issue advanced further than it usually does. Town community safety officer Michael Hutton, also the town code enforcement officer, then consulted with state wildlife officers and determined the coop would present to much of a risk of attracting predators. He denied Riffle's request on May 31.

It is not acceptable for a law to be passed strictly because an individual’s choice of dress may offend the delicate sensibilities of certain citizens. “I don’t like it” is not a valid argument. We cannot allow for the rights of a few to be stripped away so that they may conform to the societal standards of the many.

If a majority of Mobilians were offended by people with disfigured or ugly faces, would that give the city the right to enact an ordinance requiring those individuals with disfigured or ugly faces to wear paper bags while they are in public? I realize that this argument seems silly, and that’s because it is silly.

Furthermore, if this ordinance were to pass, what is keeping the city of Mobile from regulating the fashion choices of the rest of us? Shouldn’t the city ban offensive styles of dress across the board? I’m sure that a large number of people don’t like seeing women wearing tops that expose their cleavage or their midriffs, so let’s pass a city ordinance against that. How about shorts or skirts that are too short? Or shirts or jeans that are too tight?

I urge city officials to think rationally about this issue. Who or what are these individuals harming? What have sagging pants ever done to anyone? The answer is: Nothing. Certainly, one cannot seriously think that banning a clothing option is going to alleviate crime, and no study suggests that it does.

Let’s protect our First and Fourteenth Amendment rights. If that means we have to see someone wearing drooping trousers, then so be it.

Raccoons: Can’t trap, shoot or move them

I would like to make folks aware of a “Catch-22” involving the capture and removal of raccoons within the city limits of Mobile.

For a time, the city of Mobile’s animal shelter would put them to sleep for those of us who trapped them in our yards. I am assuming that the cost became prohibitive and the powers-that-be in that department put a stop to this practice. Now you must get a permit from the Department of Conservation before the animal shelter will put a raccoon to sleep, and it will accept only one raccoon per permit. Each permit for trapping raccoons is good for a year. In effect, with this permit, you are allowed to have one raccoon per year put to sleep.

We live in the city, within five or six miles of downtown, and we have trapped 43 raccoons and four opossums. We are not allowed to shoot the raccoons in the city limits; it is against the law. You cannot release them on someone’s property without that person’s permission; it is against the law. And who in his right mind would permit it? You cannot transport them across a county line or state line; it is against the law because of diseases — the same diseases we do not want in our yard.
