Sanford Medical Equipment to close Cherokee location

Sanford Health Home Medical Equipment is part of the Sanford Health Network, one of the five divisions of Sanford Health, and they have 14 Home Medical Equipment offices, including offices in Orange City, Sheldon and Spirit Lake.

Sanford Health Home Equipment has also had a Cherokee office, located at 1509 N. 2nd Street (the former Hardee's Restaurant), since 2003, but a decision was made recently to close the Cherokee location on August 19th. According to Sanford employee Jessica Kannegieter, Sanford corporate management felt that it would be more economically efficient for them to merge the services provided at the Cherokee location with those provided at their Orange City location. Kannegieter said that she believes that Cherokee area consumers will still be able to get medical equipment, such as oxygen tanks and ventilators, from the Orange City office, and she also said that she thinks that deliveries to Cherokee area customers will "probably be twice a week." Kannegieter is not certain of all the future details, because she will no longer be working for the company.

Kannegieter had already planned to leave her employment at Sanford prior to last week's announcement, as she is planning on opening a new business in Aurelia, a coffee shop called Mud on Main. That establishment, which will serve coffee, muffins, and other special items, will be located in the south side of the former Back Bar/Studebaker's Restaurant building on South Main Street in Aurelia. The north half of the building will be the new location for a full service salon, New Reflections, which is owned and operated by Mary Schulenberg.

Remodeling of the building, which suffered extensive fire damage a few years ago, is going on at this time, and Kannegieter is hopeful that the businesses will be operational at that location in September.

Sanford wants to offer insurance in N.D.

As Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health prepares to merge with Fargo, N.D.-based MeritCare, it also is seeking to offer health insurance in North Dakota.

Sanford has requested permission from the state Insurance Department. Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm says a review of the application will take two to three months.

He says there are a host of issues to look at, from what type of service would be offered to whether the company seeking permission has adequate staff.

Hamm says he wants to see North Dakota's insurance market become more competitive. But he says he also wants the right type of companies in the state - those that will provide good service and will be around "for the long haul.
