But instead Enna finds herself in fits of laughter over the slightest thing.
Mum Vana, 40, said: “Once she starts giggling she can’t stop. It’s so lovely to hear after everything she has been through. She was laughing most in the first three weeks after surgery.
“Once she started, we would find ourselves doing the same. It was so infectious.” Enna was diagnosed with a brain tumour after a visit to an optician in June revealed swelling behind her left eye.
The life-saving op to remove the lump was a success. Now she faces 16 months of chemotherapy.
Enna’s constant giggling is called the Pseudobulbar effect – where patients who have had brain tumour surgery often express involuntary emotions.
It is believed to occur due to disruptions to the nerves. Vana and dad Dougie, of New Marske, Cleveland, says her laughter helped them get through. Vana said: “Once Enna started giggling, it was just a great way of releasing our emotions.”
Baker Dougie, 44, added: “We are so proud of her.”
Enna had the five-and-a-half hour op at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Hospital.
She stays with her parents at Crawford House, run by The Sick Children’s Trust, which allows them to be together while she is treated.
The family is raising money for the charity.
