Man Bitten By Rattlesnake Recovering
If you drive in Rockland, you know you have to watch out for deer.
Along Rockland's belts of forests, there are lots of bear sightings. Today, police say that with the high heat that has hit the region, watch out for rattlesnakes .
Stony Point police say that a Mott Farm Road resident was bitten by a rattlesnake on Wendesday. The bite victim, 54-year-old carpenter Fred Hanson, is being treated at a New York City hospital and is recovering from the bite.
Lt. Keith Williams said the police department is concerned that the weather conditions could be creating a hazard and is warning Rocklanders who live in areas known to have snakes to use caution.
Hanson, speaking from Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, said he's feeling fine and is eager to get out of the hospital. Hanson said he was bitten on the tip of one of his fingers by a 5-foot-long snake in his yard. At the time, one of his family's dogs and a family cat had noticed the snake and Hanson said he was trying to protect the animals when he was bitten.
"The snake looked like it was going after the cat," Hanson said. "I got the cat out of the way and the snake got me on the finger tip."
Hanson said he was only struck by one of the snake's fangs and was able to grab the snake and toss it away from his animals. After the incident, Hanson said he felt fine and at first did not seek medical attention. However, Hanson did agree to get the wound checked and he was treated at Nyack Hospital.
Hanson said he was sent to Jacobi Medical Center to get further treatment as a precaution. He's hoping to get out of the hospital today, but said he may be required to stay for part of the weekend.
As Hanson was recovering today, he explained that the encounter with the rattlesnake wasn't really a big deal for him. He sees the snakes all the time around his neighborhood and has frequently picked up snakes off a roadway or from spots where he thought kids might come in contact with the snake.
Hanson, a lifelong Stony Point resident who has lived on Mott Farm Road for 15 years, said he was more concerned about the danger to his pets than to himself.
"Snakes don't scare me," Hanson said.
Environmental experts said the rattlesnake bite was a rare incident, although there are lots of the snakes in Rockland County and the lower Hudson Valley region.
"There really aren't many rattlesnake bites," said Chuck Stead, an evironmental educator with Cornell University Cooperative Extension in Rockland. "You hear about people finding rattlesnakes, but not about them getting bitten. The rattlesnake really doesn't want to bit a large animal because it can lose a fang — and that's very bad for the rattlesnake.
